The client matters as much as the game.
This is where MUD accessibility actually lives. A well-configured client turns a wall of scrolling text into something you can follow; a bad one makes even a well-designed game unplayable.
Why soundpacks exist
A screen reader is a linear channel. In fast-scrolling combat text it falls behind, and by the time it reaches the line that mattered, the moment has passed.
Soundpacks fix this by adding a parallel channel. They announce combat warnings, exits, channel traffic, room changes, afflictions, cooldowns and prompt state as distinct sounds — carrying state without competing for the speech queue. Mush-Z goes furthest, giving you audio progress bars for health, movement and experience: the non-visual equivalent of the status prompt sighted players read at a glance.
If you take one thing from this site: install the soundpack. It is not decoration.
Clients
| Client | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| VIPMud | Commercial (demo available) | Purpose-built for blind players and the reference implementation of the idea. Works out of the box with JAWS, Window-Eyes, System Access, NVDA, Cobra, SuperNova/Hal and MS SAPI. Its standout feature is multiple simultaneous voices — assign a different voice, or a different screen reader entirely, per window and per output type. |
| MUSHclient | Free | The community workhorse: deeply scriptable, and fiddly enough to configure that games ship pre-built bundles for it. Start from a bundle rather than a blank install. |
| Mush-Z | Free | MUSHclient soundpack for Alter Aeon, used by over half its blind playerbase. Audio HP/move/XP bars, extensive event sounds, works with NVDA, JAWS, Window-Eyes and Hal with no configuration. Full download is around 500 MB; a lite build drops the area music. |
| TinTin++ | Free | Cross-platform, strongest on Linux. Packs exist for Alter Aeon, Cosmic Rage, Miriani, EverDark and Star Conquest. |
| The Soundpack Vault | Free | One installer bundling TinTin++ soundpacks for Cosmic Rage, Miriani, EverDark and Star Conquest. The fastest way to get set up for the space MUDs. |
| MonkeyTerm | Free | Common among blind players. Community scripts and sounds for Alter Aeon were assembled by the player Mathayas — by blind players, for blind players. |
| Mudlet | Free | Modern, scriptable, cross-platform. Reported accessible for visually impaired players, though not blind-specific in the way VIPMud is. |
| GMud | Free | Compact; works with some screen readers. Soundpacks available for Alter Aeon. |
Fastest path to playing
Download the Materia Magica V.I. bundle — it is about 18 MB, pre-configured, and the game has a live in-game support channel if it does not work. Once you are comfortable with a MUD client, move to Alter Aeon with Mush-Z for the deepest experience.
